The Best Time to Surf Jeffreys Bay — A Season-by-Season Guide

Jeffreys Bay is one of the most consistently excellent surf destinations on the planet. But “consistently excellent” doesn’t mean every month is the same. Like any world-class wave, J-Bay has a rhythm — and knowing that rhythm can mean the difference between scoring perfect overhead peelers and spending your week in blown-out slop.

Here’s an honest breakdown of what to expect throughout the year.

The Short Answer: June to August

If you want the best possible chance of surfing J-Bay at its finest, the Southern Hemisphere winter — June, July, and August — is when it happens.

This is when the Southern Ocean swells are at their most powerful and consistent, the offshore winds cooperate most reliably, and Supertubes shows you what all the fuss is about. The Billabong Pro (now the Surf Ranch Pro/WSL event) has historically been held in July for this exact reason — the pros know when to show up.

Water temperature sits around 14–17°C (57–63°F), so a good 3/2mm wetsuit is essential. The air is cool and crisp. The days are shorter. But the waves make up for all of it.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January – February (Southern Summer)

Warm weather (25–30°C), warm water (20–22°C), but this is the least consistent period for surf. Onshore winds are more frequent, and the swells tend to be smaller and less powerful. Still worth surfing — just temper expectations. Great for beginners or non-surfers who want to explore the town and coastline.

March – April (Early Autumn)

Conditions start to improve as summer winds ease. You’ll begin to see more swell activity, the winds become more variable, and the crowds thin out from the holiday period. A genuinely underrated window for a trip, especially if you prefer fewer people in the water.

May (Late Autumn)

The swells are building, the weather is cooling, and May is an excellent shoulder-season option. Fewer crowds than peak winter, water still reasonable at around 17–18°C, and you’ll have days that feel like full winter quality. Often the best value for money.

June – July – August (Winter — Prime Time)

This is it. Powerful, long-period swells from the Southern Ocean wrap around the point and produce those long, winding right-handers J-Bay is famous for. Supertubes, Impossibles, Boneyards — the whole stretch fires. Offshore (westerly/south-westerly) winds are most frequent in the mornings. July in particular can produce some of the most extraordinary surf you’ll ever witness, let alone surf yourself.

Come prepared: wetsuit, booties if you run cold, and the mental readiness to share the water with some very good surfers.

September – October (Spring)

A beautiful transition period. Swells remain solid, the water starts warming, and the days get longer. October especially can feel like you’re getting the best of both worlds — quality surf without the full chill of winter. Spring wildflowers bloom across the Eastern Cape, and the town has a lighter, more relaxed energy.

November – December (Early Summer)

The swells become less consistent as the Southern Ocean quietens for summer, but you’ll still get surf — just more variable. The upside: warm weather, warmer water, and a festive atmosphere around the town. Great for a combined surf and relaxation trip rather than a hardcore swell-chasing mission.

What About the Crowds?

July is peak season, which means more surfers. Supertubes is an internationally renowned wave, and during a good swell in July, it will be busy. That said, J-Bay is a long stretch of coastline with multiple breaks — there’s almost always somewhere to surf that isn’t crowded. Our retreats factor this in, and part of local knowledge is knowing exactly where to be and when.

If crowds are a concern for you, May or September are often the sweet spot: quality waves, far fewer bodies in the water.

Our Take

We run retreats year-round because J-Bay is worth visiting in every season — the experience just changes. A winter trip is about powerful surf, focus, and the raw energy of a great wave doing what it does. A summer trip is warmer, more mellow, and brilliant for anyone newer to surfing or wanting to pair waves with a fuller travel experience.

The best time to come is honestly the time that works for you. If you want to talk through when makes most sense for your level and what you’re after, get in touch — we’re happy to help you figure it out.
